Toshiba’s Head Mounted Washing Machine

The system exhibits a wide viewing angle of 120 degrees horizontally by 70 degrees vertically without head tracking, and 360 degrees x 360 degrees with head tracking. We assume the head tracking feature is afforded by the fact that it sits right over your head.

We jokingly came up with a similar idea in my first startup. We called the “VR Lampshade.” I can’t believe anyone’s actually doing it. It combines the worst of HMDs and projection environments in one inconvenient package.

One benefit of big projection environments is that the imagery is always there, even 360 degrees of video is possible. And there’s zero latency for simply turning your head (linear movement is another matter). HMDs can have the advantage of portability. But this combination makes no sense in the long term.

BTW, the augmented reality version of this same technology would be to put a projector on your head that puts virtual imagery on whatever you’re looking at. I wonder if they’ll try that next.
