Dr. Randy Pausch’s Last Lesson

CMU professor gives his last lesson on life

That’s just a highlights video.

Here’s a link to the the complete media stream from the event (about 1hr, plus).

I’m posting this on the professional site because Randy has made some great contributions to the field of virtual reality, science, and education — and everyone should know about it.

I’m also posting it because I know Randy. I worked with him when I was at Disney. And I can attest that he’s not putting on a show or brave face. That’s exactly how he is in person: positive, smart, and genuine.

He doesn’t want pity or sadness. He’s achieved his childhood dreams. So I’m not sad for him, but for his family, friends, and, in fact, the rest of the world, who will miss him, whether they all know it or not.

  1. To bad this guy doesn’t have any spiritual grounding. At least he never mentions God or his belief in him. Sad

  2. Mary, maybe he just respects his audience so much that he neither preaches nor falls back on trite platitudes?

To say he doesn’t have any spiritual grounding is both ignorant and sad, considering you don’t know the man.

I, for one, am glad he didn’t waste one second telling us about his own religion, when his lecture was mainly about how to achieve your goals in life through active measures and understanding vs. praying for some invisible all-powerful parental surrogate to solve your problems or show you the way.

  3. Mary,

I have listened to quite a few things about Randy and he has tons of spiritual grounding. His father was a minister! This was a lecture at a college. He probably couldn’t interject his personal feelings on spirituality. I personally think the world would be a better place if we had more Randy’s!!!

  4. Mary,

So if Randy had said he believed in God and therefore dying at 47 and leaving his 3 young children behind wouldn’t be so bad, you’d think this was less sad!!! I’d think he was a fool. His lecture was what he wanted it to be for his children. If you missed that & you missed his message because you were waiting for the G word I’m sad for you.

  6. Dr. Randy Pausch “is” (not was) one of the greatest inspirational leaders of a timeless zone. Living the essence of the moment is an art he demonstrated to all of us and we respect his natural, honest, timeless teachings infinetely.

    Rest in peace.
